A Spiritual Lesson from My Daughter

Rodney Jones

One of the great joys of my life has been to share the spiritual journey with my children. They have enriched and deepened my understanding of life in countless ways, giving gifts of insight and realization.

My journey as an ECKist has been one of finding God in all activities—in the smallest of details as well as the grand events. Yet nowhere has the presence of the ECK (Divine Spirit), and the guidance of the MAHANTA, the Living ECK Master, been more evident to me than in my family.

My children and grandchildren have been a wonderful mirror of God and a window into the presence of love’s touch in each moment.

When my youngest daughter was just about six years old, I was taking her to an ECK event with me. As we waited by the elevator, she looked up and pointed at the pin I was wearing and said, “Daddy, what does that mean?” I responded with a textbook answer, saying confidently, “That is a symbol of our religion, Eckankar.” She looked at me with mischievous eyes and said, “Wrong!”

Surprised, I looked at her and said, “Well, young lady, what do you think it means?”

Smiling, she said, “Well, Daddy, last night in dreamland, Wah Z (the inner form of Sri Harold Klemp) said it was a symbol for those who love and serve God. Is that right, Daddy?”

I was stunned. I had relied on the outer definition of the EK symbol. She had gotten the true and deeper meaning from her inner experience with the Dream Master, that aspect of the MAHANTA, the Living ECK Master that teaches and guides ECKists in the dream state.

I looked at her lovingly and humbly and said, “You’re right. That is what that means.” I never forgot that lesson. I was shown a deeper understanding of the EK symbol by my six-year-old daughter, as given to her by the MAHANTA. A good lesson, well given. I am constantly learning spiritual lessons from my children and grandchildren.
